Siamese Information
History
Siamese cats originated in ancient times in the sacred temple of Siam (now known as Thailand).
The breed is surrounded by legend. It was believed that these cats would ward off evil spirits and bring good luck to their owner.
They reached the United States of American in 1878 and the UK in 1884.
Characteristics
Two types of Siamese can be found, the traditional type and the modern type. The main differences are in appearance with the former bearing a round head with a strong, compact body and the latter bearing a triangular head with a light and slender body.
These small to medium sized cats have distinctive blue eyes and coat colouring. There are four colour officially recognised including seal point (fawn), blue point (pale grey blue), chocolate point (ivory), lilac point point (white). Their points which include the face, ears, legs and feet are different colours to the body. (see picture)
These cats are active and loving and are very people orientated and make great companies.
Health
Average lifespan is 15 -20 years.
Common Illnesses include;
- Mammary Tumour – Siamese cats have an increased risk of developing breast cancer in comparison to other breeds. Signs include breast lumps, ulceration, swelling and/or pain.
- Cancers – They are predisposed to developing certain cancers including nasal cavity tumours and small intestinal adenocarcinoma.
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
- Feline Asthma – Allergy resulting in a progressive chronic bronchitis. It cannot be cured and requires on going treatment once diagnosed.
- Pyloric Stenosis – Narrowing of the entry to the stomach which causes vomiting.
- Hydrocephalus – Abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. It can be inherited or as a result of infection or trauma.
